League of Ireland Match Worn Shirt
This shirt was worn in the match against Brazil played on 23rd September 1981. The match is
regarded as a full international by the Brazilian FA but the Football
Association of Ireland consider it to be a League of Ireland fixture and not a
full international. The match ended in a 6-0 win for Brazil. The League of
Ireland side wore these unusual shirts in the match which, to the best of my
knowledge, were never made available for sale to the public. The sleeves are
very similar to the Adidas 'Three Stripes' design but the shirt is manufactured by
O'Neills and not Adidas. It is a green, home, short-sleeved top
and has not been signed. The shirt was worn by Liam Buckley who
played for Shamrock Rovers at the time. Buckley swapped his shirt with the
Brazilian player Edinho at the final whistle and it was subsequently sold to me by someone with very good
ties to the Brazilian FA who was also selling other swap shirts from Edinho's
personal collection at the time. Because I knew that the shirt came from Edinho
I was able to check the matches he played in against Irish sides - therefore I
can be certain that this shirt is from this specific match.
